Skies looked a little dismal as the racers lined up at registration and tech inspection on Thursday…but the sun came out and all was well..well, at least till Sunday morning, but more on that later. What was lost in quantity of entrants was more than made up for in the quality of the racers that attended the very first VCRA points event. Some of the best in the land showed up to take a shot at capturing a lead in the points race, and so it began. Fridays rally was “pretty darn hard” according to some of the folks. I guess it should have been, because the afternoon break was in “Hell”. Yep, Hell, Michigan..it really exists..however, a couple of the racers still do not know that as they drove right on by…Now, how in the hell would you miss “Hell”? At any rate, they finally found their way and actually did pretty well for the day…”Better Lucky than Good” they say! At the end of the day, the number 8 team of Heresy & McDorr had bested the field with a total of 3.80 seconds. Saturday was a chamber of commerce day…blue skies and exactly the right temperature. The racers were prepared for an even tougher day as they headed out. They say strange things happen on an old car rally..perhaps one of those was the fact that David Haverty was enjoying lunch at the Wiard’s Orchards, a sandwich and a cup of apple cider. While taking a bite of his sandwich, a bee, that had taken a liking to his sandwich, stung Dave on the tounge..OUCH!!! Now this was not good..more so because Dave was not having the best day of rallying he had ever had anyway!!! He can tell you all the story. Dale McClenaghan was talking to his impeccable ’39 Ford (Why are you missing under power? He asked) Well, a new distributor cap, and all was well again. The team of Tourje & Tourje were having a stellar run (probably the best of the day) when they attempted to leave the restart after lunch. The differential said “Bang” and that was it…bad deal!..Tommy Hudson did have a customer though (the alimony payment will now be paid!!) Oh, there are more stories, but you’ll have to come to Georgia to hear them all. Anyhow, team Caldwell raised to the occasion with a winning score of 10.22 seconds for the seven leg day. And it should be noted at this point that there were three or four other teams that had been hanging around in the top five with very consistent runs…who would the winner be? What would Sunday hold for surprises? Sunday morning had a surprise in store for us all…RAIN!! And kinda cold…But that won’t stop a rally! The brave in open cars bundled up (while the guys in the closed cars kinda snickered under their breath). And away they go! Who will come out on top? Its anybody’s guess. Right off the bat, one of the top teams missed a sign and that put them out of contention…but did they give up? Nope (in fact they scored some of the better legs for the remainder of the day) Then the sun came out and it began to warm up nicely. Now, how do you figure the factor for this? Speedo check in the rain..now its getting’ hotter…what to do..what to do!! If it was easy, everyone could do it! Through it all, consistency paid off. The team of Wirth & Feeney obviously made the right decision on factor, scoring a 7.11 second day. While some did not figure it out as well, they still were in contention for the overall win. Scoring allowed for the worst two legs from the first two days to be pitched.. that score is added to the total Sunday score. When all was tallied, team Feeney & Wirth had bested the field with a total score of 30.81, followed oh so closely by team Hersey & McDorr. Knowles & Gentry, Caldwell & Caldwell and Harper & Blair finished out the top five. Our deepest thanks to Dale and Susan McClenaghan for opening up the Roush Museum and providing the finish luncheon. And to George Tarbutton who hosted the Saturday lunch at Waird’s Orchards. And a special thanks to Lynn McClenaghan and the volunteers she rounded up from the Roush stable..Without them, we certainly would not have been able to pull this off. See www.vintagecarrally.com for all the rally result details..Car #98 is now the leader in the VCRA points race. See you all in Georgia!!!! Rex |
